*Window replacements can seem highly technical and the following terms will help you compare windows for their impact on utility bills and interior comfort.

Low E. Argon: Low Emissivity glass is coated with a thin metallic layer that allows light to pass while blocking ultraviolet (UV) and infrared solar energy and reflecting away interior heat energy.

UV Block: Measures the amount of damaging UV light that is block from being transmitted through the glass.

U-Value: The rate of heat flow through a glazing system. The lower a window’s U’-value, the better it’s insulating properties.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): The amount of direct solar radiation that enters through the glass into the home as heat. The lower the number, the better the glazing is at preventing solar heat gain.

Fusion Welded: By far, the strongest way to construct a window or door.

*Two most commonly used windows are wood and vinyl. While wood windows are available in both full frame and insert style, vinyl is available only as an insert window where the existing frame gets used or a jamb extension gets built. Of the two, vinyl is the most popular due to it’s lower cost, reduced maintenance, durability, and industry setting thermal performance.
